Our Favorite Off-The-Grid Destinations- PUBLISHED AT APOTHECAI.COM
It’s nearly impossible to go anywhere without a tether tying us to our work or other obligations. Digital distraction is a challenge for the vast majority of us—whether it’s our desire to check email or a need to see what’s new on Instagram—and the tools that keep us connected in day-to-day life can hinder us from truly being present when we travel.
Travel presents the opportunity to disconnect from our devices and our daily routines. When we add intention to our plans and opt for a digital detox by heading off the grid, the benefits increase tenfold. Along with a sense of rejuvenation, an “unplugged” trip allows us to tap into real presence. It may be one of the best perks of going on vacation.
DISCOVER OUR FOUR FAVORITE OFF-THE-GRID DESTINATIONS ON THE WEST COAST.
1. Alpine Lakes High Camp :: Leavenworth, Washington
Located just two hours from Seattle, Alpine Lakes High Camp consists of nine backcountry cabins adjacent to the Alpine Lakes Wilderness area. Explore the beautiful surrounding area in high summer or bundle up for a winter hike. Although the cabins are all off-grid, there are still plenty of amenities including a wood-fired hot tub and sauna.
2) Breitenbush Hot Springs :: Detroit, Oregon
Whether you come to Breitenbush for a workshop, a retreat, or simply a day visit, you’ll deepen your connection with yourself and nature. This worker-owned cooperative features natural hot springs, a glaciar-fed river, and exquisite forests and mountain scenery. Electricity, provided by a generator, is limited.
3) Treebones Resort :: Big Sur, California
Located on California’s iconic Big Sur coast, Treebones Resort is perched on the hills above the Pacific Ocean. The views from the dining room or the sushi bar are stunning: Watch whales play while you dine or take in the sunset while sampling dessert. Deluxe lodgings—think of the glam in glamping—let you connect with your surroundings in comfort. Choose from yurts, tent sites, or Human Nest (pictured) or The Twig Hut—two fairytale sleeping chambers you’ll be forgiven for taking photos of. Just try to wait until after your holiday to post it on social.
4) Cultus Camp :: Pioneer Town, California
Stay among the Joshua trees in the sole, spacious, and deluxe cabin at Cultus Camp. You will be the only guest here, so take the opportunity to tune into yourself and feel the magic of the place. Created by artists who fell in love with the Mojave desert, the setting is an inspiration. Unwind, unplug, and reflect.
